Rip Currents Onshore Submarine Canyons

چکیده
The long-term goals of this research are to understand the dynamics of rip currents generated by largescale variations in alongshore pressure gradients and wave forcing, and the impact of rip currents on nearshore bathymetry. These goals will be accomplished collaboratively using field observations and numerical models, and will be pursued as part of the Nearshore Canyon Experiment (NCEX) scheduled for the fall of 2003.

Rip Currents Onshore Submarine Canyons: NCEX Analysis
The long-term goals of this research are to understand the dynamics of rip currents generated by largescale variations in alongshore pressure gradients and wave forcing, and the impact of rip currents on nearshore bathymetry. These goals will be accomplished collaboratively using field observations obtained as part of the Nearshore Canyon Experiment (NCEX) held in the fall of 2003 and with nume...

The objectives of our studies in FY09 are to collect observations of currents, waves, and bathymetry on tidal flats, and to develop, test, and improve models for tidal-flat processes and for mud-induced dissipation of waves in shallow water. Specific goals relating to tidal flats are to: Investigate the relative importance to the circulation of riverine and tidal flows, and Estimate the bottom ...
متن کاملFlow Near Submarine Canyons Driven by Constant Winds
Circulation over coastal submarine canyons driven by constant upwelling or downwelling wind stress is simulated and analyzed with a primitive equation ocean model. Astoria Canyon, on the west coast of North America, is the focus of this study, and model results are consistent with most major features of mean canyon circulation observed in Astoria Canyon. Near-surface flow crosses over the canyo...
متن کاملNumerical Modeling of Onshore Plankton Transport
Cross-shore exchange of plankton plays an important role in marine ecosystems and coastal communities. Larvae of many intertidal invertebrate species grow offshore and come back to the shore for settlement by crossing the energetic surf zone; however, shoreward transport mechanisms are not well understood. To test the possible onshore transport mechanisms, numerical simulations were performed b...
متن کاملNumerical simulations of larval transport into a rip-channeled surf zone
Competent larvae of intertidal invertebrates have to migrate toward shore for settlement; however, their migration through the surf zone is not understood. We investigated larval transport mechanisms at a ripchanneled beach. Because tracking larvae in the surf zone is infeasible, we used a three-dimensional biophysical model to simulate the processes. The coupled model consists of a physical mo...
